Baptism Preparation

Lutherans believe God uses the Sacrament of Baptism to impart grace.  Jesus commanded his apostles to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19). The parents of the child who is to be baptized meets with the pastor for instruction on the meaning and importance of the sacrament. They may choose two baptized people to be the baby’s godparents. The godparents promise to help bring the child up in the faith, especially if the parents are not able to. During the baptismal liturgy, parents promise to raise the child in the faith, bring them to services and teach them the messages of the Bible. The people of the parish participate in the liturgy and agree to support the family’s faith journey. An adult who has not been baptized in another Christian church and wants to join the Lutheran church meets with the pastor for instruction.
